Aluminium
and the arts
The
search naturally had to begin with the question: "What is art?",
which we just as naturally leave unanswered here. For us, it is a question
of a creative act executed by or with the material of aluminium.
In graphic arts, the use of aluminium for the construction of three-dimensional
objects or sculptures appears obvious. The spectrum of materials used
by artists has exploded since ancient times. Not only the "classical" materials
such as stone or bronze are used, but materials of all kinds, from wood,
through glass to wax and sand. Aluminium slipped easily into this group.
Some artists have discovered this, for example the Romanian artist
Iona Metes. You can see her work in lacquered aluminium "Movement" (2000,
in Hof/Saale) opposite. Other contemporary artists who have used aluminium
include Ricky Knies and Herbert Rauer.
Aluminium is an ideal material, because it is easy to shape, extremely
resistant and robust. It also gives artists the chance to make a name
for themselves as the use of aluminium in art is still quite new.
