Electroplating is a method of surface treatment which allows precious
metals or more precious metals to be applied to non-precious metals.
Electric current is passed through an electrolytic bath. The metal to
be applied (e.g. gold or silver) is located at the anode and the object
to be coated at the cathode. The electric current separates tiny metal
particles from the anode and deposits them on the object. The object
to be plated is thus uniformly coated with gold, silver or another metal.
The longer the object spends in the bath, the thicker the metal (e.g.
gold) plate.
