salt electrolysis |

The reduction of aluminium oxide is carried out by fused salt electrolysis.
The electrolytic cell consists of a graphite vessel (cathode) into which
graphite blocks (anode) project from above. Metallic aluminium (and slag
as a waste product) are formed from the aluminium oxide due to the current
flow (light arc) in the cell.
